Cigarette smoking attenuates kidney protection by angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition in nondiabetic chronic kidney disease

American Journal of Nephrology Sep 25, 2017

Roehm B, et al. - It remains unknown if smoking cessation restores angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition (ACEI)-related kidney protection in nondiabetic chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this current study, it was demonstrated that possibly by restoring kidney-protective impacts of ACEI via reductions in kidney angiotensin II (AII) and oxidative stress, smoking cessation versus continued smoking ameliorated estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline in nondiabetic CKD treated with ACEI.
