Barbhaiya M, et al. - This study entailed investigation of the link between cigarette smoking and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) risk, overall and by anti-double stranded DNA (dsDNA) presence, in two prospective cohort studies. Researchers observed that current smoking and >10 pack-years of smoking was strongly and specifically associated with dsDNA+ SLE, a finding that indicates an involvement of smoking in the pathogenesis of dsDNA+ SLE.
