Chronobiology and sleep in cluster headache
Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain Jun 25, 2019
de Coo IF, et al. - In episodic and chronic cluster headache patients vs controls, researchers investigated differences in sleep quality, chronotype, and the ability to alter individual sleep rhythms. A total of 478 episodic, 147 chronic cluster headache patients and 367 controls took an interest. For this cross-sectional study, cluster headache patients and non-headache controls from the Dutch Leiden University Cluster headache neuro-Analysis program (aged 18 and above) completed web-based questionnaires. In both episodic and chronic cluster headache, sleep quality is reduced, most probably due to cluster headache assaults that strike at night. Patients with episodic cluster headache report more trouble coping with decreased sleep, while chronic patients are less willing to change their rhythm of sleep. Cluster headache patients are probable to benefit from a structured, regular daily schedule, although not directly demonstrated. Most commonly reported were lack of sleep and troubled sleep (ie, moving and turning a lot).
