Chronic stress, depression and personality type in patients with myasthenia gravis
European Journal of Neurology Sep 14, 2019
Bogdan A, Barnett C, Ali A, et al. - Researchers sought to identify any connections between severity of myasthenia gravis (MG) and chronic stress, depression and personality type. Between March 2017 and December 2017, 179 consecutive adult patients with confirmed MG attending the Neuromuscular Clinic were included. According to this cross-sectional study, there was an important connection between MG severity and depression and chronic stress, as well as female gender. These results should increase consciousness that MG's long-term management should tackle depression and potential stress and consider behavioural management to prevent immune imbalance related to stress. Personality traits are interconnected with a perception of stressful situations and predisposition to depression, so in addition to other common triggers such as infections or medication, assessment of trigger factors for MG relapse should consider psychological aspects.
