Chronic sleep deprivation and gender-specific risk of depression in adolescents: A prospective population-based study
BMC Public Health Jun 14, 2018
Conklin AI, et al. - In this longitudinal study of young people in the British Columbia Adolescent Substance Use Survey (BASUS) cohort, researchers determined the prospective link between cumulative sleep deprivation and subsequent levels of depressive symptomatology among adolescents. They also determined the impact of gender on this link. They performed multivariable linear regression models and post-estimation analysis. They found that young women demonstrated an increased risk of major depression in association with chronic sleep deprivation. A recommendation was made for the inclusion of relevant strategies in mental health promotion for young people in order to ensure young women can achieve recommended amounts of sleep.
