Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps impact in severe asthma patients: Evidences from the Severe Asthma Network Italy (SANI) registry
Respiratory Medicine Apr 10, 2020
Canonica GW, Malvezzi L, Blasi F, et al. - Researchers assessed clinical as well as laboratory characteristics of patients enrolled in the Severe Asthma Network in Italy (SANI) registry, which represents a web-based observatory gathering demographic, clinical, functional and inflammatory data of patients suffering from severe asthma, with main focus on chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP). Experts evaluated 695 patients experiencing severe asthma enrolled in 66 SANI centers. A prevalence of 40.6% was reported for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis. Patients with CRSwNP vs individuals without nasal polyposis were found to have significantly more frequent atopic dermatitis and bronchiectasis, as well as significantly higher FeNO values. A significantly higher number of asthma exacerbations per year, more days on oral corticosteroids and more probability to be oral corticosteroids (OCS) long term users, were observed in patients with CRSwNP. It was concluded that in patients experiencing severe asthma, OCS sparing is required, predominantly in individuals with CRSwNP, adopting appropriate strategies such as a better adherence to the treatment with inhaled therapy as per the GINA (Global INitiative for Asthma) suggestions, the use of biologic agents and a multidisciplinary approach of the patient.
