Chronic rhino-sinusitis treatment in children with cystic fibrosis: A cross-sectional survey of pediatric pulmonologists and otolaryngologists
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Jun 09, 2019
Lowery AS, et al. - Given a variation in the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in children, especially when it comes to the frequency of surgery for nasal polyposis, researchers sought for the level of agreement that practitioners had with various approaches to CRS care in pediatric cystic fibrosis (CF) patients using a 28-question survey sent to pediatric otolaryngologists (POs) and pulmonologists (PPs) who care for pediatric CF patients. Analyzing responses from 114 POs and 50 PPs, strong agreement was noted between POs and PPs regarding the impact of CRS on overall disease state and quality of life of pediatric CF patients. However, regarding the medical and surgical management of CRS, the groups differed significantly in approaches to pediatric CF patients. Preference for multi-modal approach was reported in POs while single-modal approaches were preferred by PPs. PPs showed their inclination towards IV antibiotics while POs tend toward oral steroids when medical management was considered.
