Chronic pulmonary disease is associated with pain spreading and restless legs syndrome in middle-aged women: A population-based study
Sleep and Breathing Jun 13, 2018
Ding Z, et al. - In a population-based sample of females (aged 18–64 year) with comorbid chronic pulmonary disease (CPD) (severe bronchitis, emphysema, asthma), researchers determined the prevalence as well as risk factors for pain and restless legs syndrome (RLS). Using four validated diagnostic criteria, a diagnosis of RLS was defined. In univariate and multivariate analyses, evaluation of anthropometrics and co-morbidities was done as covariates. In women with CPD, overrepresentation of widespread pain was reported. In females with known CPD, more prevalence of severe pain (VAS rating ≥ 7) was noted. Multivariate analysis revealed the association of CPD with a 30% risk increase for RLS. Overall, CPD was identified as an independent risk factor for severe and widespread pain as well as for RLS.
