Chronic opioid use following surgery for oral cavity cancer
JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery Jan 05, 2018
Pang J, et al. - This paper entailed the evaluation of the prevalence of chronic opioid use in patients undergoing surgery for oral cavity cancer. In addition, authors probed into the possible associated clinical factors and the correlation between opioid use and survival. Results demonstrated that the prevalence of chronic opioid use was considerable, in patients undergoing surgery for oral cavity tumors. A link was disclosed between preoperative opioid use, tobacco use, and development of persistence, recurrence, or a second primary tumor with chronic opioid use after surgery. Furthermore, both preoperative and chronic opioid use correlated with decreased survival.
