Chronic opioid use and clinical outcomes in lung transplant recipients: A single center cohort study
The Clinical Respiratory Journal Aug 03, 2018
Drees D, et al. - In this retrospective analysis, researchers determined the impact of long-term chronic opioid use on clinical outcomes among bilateral lung transplantation (LTx) recipients aged 12 and older followed at their institution 1-5 years post-transplant. The definition of chronic opioid use was ≥3 months of consecutive prescribed use. Survival, hospitalization, Emergency Department and urgent care visits, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), and allograft rejection, were assessed as outcomes of interest. Findings suggested, for the first time, that late-onset chronic opioid use may be related to decreased lung function and increased mortality after LTx and hence, the routine monitoring of transplant recipients should include evaluation of chronic opioid use.
