Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the risk of esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus, and esophageal adenocarcinoma: A primary care case-control study
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Oct 16, 2019
Menon S, et al. - Researchers conducted a case-control study using data from the UK General Practice Research Database to explore the connection between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and medication used to treat it, and the likelihood of reflux esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus, and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). The study sample included participants aged ≥ 50 years with COPD as well as controls without COPD matched by age, general practitioners practice, and time on the database. By cross-referencing cancer registry data, EAC was confirmed. In total, 45,141 cases were analyzed. Overall, the researchers found that there may be a link between COPD and an increased risk of reflux esophagitis and Barrett’s esophagus—but not EAC.
