Chronic liver disease patients have worse outcomes and increased postoperative complications after orthopedic fractures
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Apr 11, 2019
Mavilia MG, et al. - Data were analyzed to estimate the postoperative risk factors and clinical consequences of fractures in subjects with chronic liver disease (CLD). They observed 17,388 cases with CLD and 913,806 without CLD (non-CLD). They noticed almost twice the inpatient mortality in subjects with CLD vs non-CLD cases. They reported higher total hospital charges at $76,198±99,494 in CLD cases vs $64,294±95,673, with a longer mean length of stay (LOS) at 7.4±8.6 days vs 5.6±7.2 days in non-CLD. They also recorded higher rates of infections, improper wound healing, and bleeding in CLD patients.
