Chronic kidney disease and undiagnosed atrial fibrillation in individuals with diabetes
Cardiovascular Diabetology Oct 07, 2020
Heo NJ, Rhee SY, Waalen J, et al. - Among 608 individuals with diabetes engaging in a screening program [mHealth Screening to Prevent Strokes trial], this inquiry was performed to investigate the link between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the rates of newly-diagnosed atrial fibrillation (AF). For this purpose, a self-applied wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) patch was used. Of 608 participants, 19 new cases of AF were identified over 12 months of follow-up. AF was newly diagnosed in 7.3% and 2.3% of participants with CKD and those without, respectively, during 12 months of follow-up. Findings revealed the presence of a significantly increased risk of incident AF in correlation with CKD in patients with diabetes. Improved clinical results in patients with CKD and diabetes could be achieved by detecting AF before clinical symptoms through active ECG screening.
