Chronic kidney disease and the risk of incident hearing loss
The Laryngoscope Jun 02, 2019
Gupta S, et al. - In this investigation, researchers desired to know whether lower baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate calculated using creatinine (eGFRCr), as well as decline in eGFRCr over time, were correlated with incident hearing loss. At the beginning of the Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study in 1993, serum creatinine was measured in 1,843 people (aged 48 to 80 years) without hearing loss. Follow-up assessments of creatinine were conducted at 5 years (n = 1,526) and 10 years (n = 1,095). There were 802 cases of incident hearing loss during 15,676 person-years of follow up. Overall, the serum creatinine-based equation and the risk of incident hearing loss were not significantly linked to eGFRCr or decline in eGFRCr.
