Chronic hypertension: First-trimester blood pressure control and likelihood of severe hypertension, preeclampsia and small for gestational age

Nzelu D, et al. - Women with pre-pregnancy chronic hypertension were stratified in accordance to the use of antihypertensive medications and level of blood pressure control at the first hospital visit during the first-trimester of pregnancy. In addition, researchers examined these women for the rates of severe hypertension, preeclampsia and birth of small for gestational age neonates according to such stratification. Observations revealed that the rates of development of severe hypertension, preterm preeclampsia and small for gestational age were related to use of antihypertensive medications and level of blood pressure control in women with pre-pregnancy chronic hypertension at the first hospital visit during the first-trimester of pregnancy.
