Choroidal structural changes in preterm children with and without retinopathy of prematurity
Acta Ophthalmologica Dec 17, 2019
Lavric A, Pompe MT, Markelj S, et al. - Using image binarization technique on swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) scans, researchers conducted this prospective case-control study to assess choroidal structural changes in preterm children with and without retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Participants in the study were 41 (79 eyes) children (aged 5 to 15 years) with a history of preterm birth and 33 (63 eyes) age-matched full-term children. No significant differences were found in subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) between the preterm children with or without ROP and the full-term children. Findings suggested that the reduced choroidal vascularity index (CVI) may indicate compromised choroidal vascularity in preterm children with ROP. The CVI has been found to be a more sensitive OCT biomarker than the SFCT and can be useful in assessing associated choroidal structural changes in preterm children, particularly those with ROP history.
