Cholangitis in patients with biliary atresia receiving hepatoportoenterostomy: A national database study
Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology Sep 25, 2020
Cheng K, et al. - Researchers sought to determine risk factors correlated with cholangitis in a large retrospective cohort after hepatoportoenterostomy (HPE). The Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) has been queried for BA (ICD-9 975.61) and HPE (ICD-9-CM 51.37) admissions from 2004 to 2013. One thousand one hundred twelve participants were identified with a median age at HPE of 63 days and the median number of cholangitis episodes of 2 within 2 years. After HPE, with a median of 2 episodes within 2 years, complications such as cholangitis remain a common problem for patients. Higher rates of cholangitis are correlated with portal hypertension while lower rate is related to age at HPE of > 90 days. Recurrent cholangitis is more likely to occur in Asians, patients with public insurance and those with portal hypertension.
