Chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine and hearing loss: A study in systemic lupus erythematosus patients
The Laryngoscope Feb 17, 2021
Polanski JF, Tanaka EA, Barros H, et al. - Via performing this cross‐sectional study of 84 individuals [43 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and 41 controls] with audiometry and tympanometry tests, researchers sought to delineate the hearing function in SLE patients using antimalarials (chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine). In addition, they determined if SLE causes hearing loss and if any of the serological or clinical aspects of the disease are linked with inner ear damage. More sensorineural hearing loss was observed among SLE patients vs controls (23.2% vs. 0); this is not identified to be affected by antimalarial drug use.
