Children with under-diagnosed asthma presenting to a pediatric emergency department
Journal of Asthma Jun 11, 2021
Pade KH, Thompson LR, Ravandi B, et al. - The current study sought to examine the prevalence of undiagnosed asthma among children presenting to the emergency department (ED) and to investigate associations with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. The authors surveyed parents of children, aged 2 to 17 years, who were seeking ED care for respiratory symptoms (including asthma) regarding sociodemographic characteristics, asthma symptoms, prior asthma care and morbidity, and prior asthma diagnosis. Children who present to the ED with undiagnosed asthma frequently have significant prior asthma morbidity. Strategies to improve asthma diagnosis and communication with parents may help to reduce future morbidity.
