Children with poorly controlled asthma: Randomized controlled trial of a home-based environmental control intervention
Pediatric Pulmonology Jan 10, 2019
Butz AM, et al. - In 222 children with poorly controlled asthma who were randomized into a home-based environmental control [EC] intervention (INT) or control (CON) group, followed by 12 months of Emergency Department (ED) visits, researchers investigated factors associated with repeat ED visits. Between INT and CON groups, no difference was found in increased risk of >1 ED visit at 12 months. The majority of children (75%) had moderate/severe persistent asthma. In children with poorly controlled asthma with second hand smoke (SHS) exposure, a home-based EC intervention was not successful in decreasing asthma ED revisits. Important predictors of asthma ED visits were allergic sensitization, young age, and increased controller medication use.
