Childhood outcomes following parechovirus infections in a US young infant cohort
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Feb 26, 2021
Kilbride H, et al. - In view of the reported association of parechovirus A type 3 (PeV-A3) with central nervous system infection in young infants and limited data regarding long-term outcomes, researchers here examined their US cohort with the aim to report on the frequency of neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) following PeV-A3 infection. They evaluated 19 children, term gestation, at ~3 years of age, who were hospitalized during the 2014 outbreak with laboratory-confirmed PeV-A3 infection. They frequently identified parent concerns following infant PeV-A3 disease. At 3 years of age, neurodevelopmental impairment was identified in 11% of cases. There appeared no correlation of severity at presentation with adverse childhood outcomes. Based on findings, they support undertaking longitudinal developmental monitoring following infantile PeV-A3 disease.
