Childhood maltreatment and treatment outcome in psychotic disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Aug 02, 2019
Thomas S, Höflera M, Schäferbc I, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis with 636 patients (average treatment duration: 59.2 weeks), researchers intended to determine if in psychotic disorders there is an association between childhood maltreatment (CM) and treatment outcome, defined as change in psychotic symptoms or in social or occupational functioning between first and last reported measurement. According to the findings, CM is extremely underassessed in terms of the outcome of psychotic disorders therapy. The need for more research is highlighted by the results of this meta-analysis provides proof of worse response to therapy in CM patients. If this association is verified, identifying patients with CM and considering related clinical and biological circumstances could help enhance the result of psychotic disorders therapy. That this relationship might increase with illness duration and getting older and might be stronger in schizophrenia was supported.
