Childhood food insecurity and incident diabetes: A longitudinal cohort study of 34,042 children in Ontario, Canada
Diabetic Medicine Apr 25, 2021
Clemens KK, Le B, Anderson KK, et al. - Utilizing health administrative databases linked to the Canadian Community Health Survey, researchers performed a population‐based cohort study to explore the connection between childhood food insecurity and incident diabetes. The sample consisted of children aged < 18 years from Ontario, Canada. Participants in the study were 34,042 children [32,224 from food secure households and 1,818 from food-insecure households (1,717 moderately and 101 severely food insecure)], of whom 5.3% lived in food‐insecure households. Despite being a medically and socially vulnerable population, food-insecure children do not appear to be at increased risk of incident diabetes over a median of 9.5 years.
