Childhood abuse and unplanned pregnancies: A cross-sectional study of women in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Dec 15, 2019
Drevin J, et al. - Based on the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and uses data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway, researchers conducted this cross-sectional study to analyze whether childhood emotional, physical and sexual abuse are determinants of unplanned pregnancy, whether abuse categories interact, and whether a potential bias due to participant selection (collider stratification bias) could explain the effect of childhood abuse. The sample consisted of 76,197 women partaking in the Moba for the first time, ≥ 18 years that responded to questions regarding childhood abuse and pregnancy planning. According to findings, emotional, physical and sexual abuse in childhood increases the risk of an unplanned pregnancy separately. The outcomes show that survivors of childhood abuse need more help to achieve their reproductive goals. The various category combinations of abuse showed no interaction effects.
