Chest computed tomography imaging improves potential lung donor assessment
The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Feb 19, 2019
Gauthier JM, et al. - Researchers sought to assess the efficacy of computed tomography (CT) imaging in potential lung donor assessment via conducting a retrospective cohort study of all adult donation after brain death donors managed through their local organ procurement organization. From June 2011 to November 2016, 753 donors were managed by the organ procurement organization, with a lung utilization rate ([lung donors/all organ donors] × 100) of 36.5% (275 of 753). Chest CT imaging in potential lung donors revealed structural lung disease, such as emphysema and interstitial lung disease [ILD], which have a significant negative association with lung utilization. These findings a possible significance of chest CT imaging as an important adjunct to conventional lung donor assessment criteria.
