Checking mask ventilation before neuromuscular block: A nation-wide survey of anaesthetists’ attitudes and thinking
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Aug 02, 2019
Saastamoinen M, et al. - Researchers inquired the anaesthetists in Sweden with regard to the use of a mask ventilation trial (MVT) as a component of routine induction with intubation (not rapid sequence induction or expected difficult airway). They assessed the reasons for or against the MVT, investigating the anaesthetists’ attitudes in general but also in specific scenarios. Routine use of a MVT, sometimes use, and never use was reported by 65.1%, 21.4%, and 13.5%, respectively. “To collect information regarding the airway,” was reported as the most common reason for checking mask ventilation. Most of them stated, “muscle relaxation often improves mask ventilation” as the reason for not using the MVT. At both practical and theoretical levels, many interesting comments on airway management were found. In Sweden, routine use of a MVT was identified as a common practice, though the proof for increased patient safety is lacking.
