Characterizing patient-centered postoperative recovery after adult cardiac surgery: A systematic review
Journal of the American Heart Association Oct 29, 2019
Mori M, Angraal S, Chaudhry SI, et al. - In order to describe studies on postoperative recovery following adult cardiac surgery using patient-reported outcome measures, researchers performed this systematic review. They searched MEDLINE and Web of Science to identify the studies that prospectively evaluated postoperative recovery on adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery utilizing patient-reported outcome measures. Nociceptive symptoms, mental health, physical function, activities of daily living, sleep, and cognitive function represent six recovery domains that were defined by previous literature. The inclusion criteria were satisfied by 105 articles of the 3,432 studies. Findings revealed that studies of postoperative patient-reported outcome measures were low in volume and most frequently single site without external validation. Also, these differed in their approach to missing data and were narrow in the domains and variety of patients. There is a necessity to confirm the evidence base for postoperative patient-reported outcome measures.
