Characterizing eating disorder diagnosis and related outcomes by sexual orientation and gender identity in a National Sample of college students

Eating Behaviours May 28, 2021

Grammer AC, Vazquez M, Fitzsimmons-Craft EE, et al. - In a national sample of college students, the present study was conducted to evaluate differences in probable diagnoses of eating disorders (EDs) (i.e., anorexia nervosa, clinical/subthreshold bulimia nervosa, or binge eating disorder)) and weight and shape concerns by sexual orientation and gender identity, and to explore differences in ED chronicity and probable comorbid psychiatric diagnoses by sexual orientation and gender identity. Researchers examined a total of 8,531 students (24% sexually diverse (SD); 2.7% gender diverse). Tukey-corrected logistic and linear regressions were conducted to analyze differences in outcomes separately by sexual orientation and gender identity, adjusting for age, race, and ethnicity. As per the results, some sexual and gender diverse students may be at heightened risk for EDs, indicating the need to distinguish mechanisms that contribute to disparities.
