The necessity for intravenous iron was related to anemia refractory to oral treatment or the necessity for rapid iron recovery. Compared to a male population of the same age, women of fertile age are a population at risk of requiring intravenous iron because the blood loss is related to pregnancy, delivery, and puerperium as well as heavy menstrual bleeding.
