Characterization of injury induced by routine surgical manipulations of nasal septal cartilage

JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery Sep 26, 2019

Thomas WW, Brody RM, Alotaibi AD, et al. - Researchers sought to characterize and compare common surgical manipulations’ effects on septal cartilage to assess insight into their implications for rhinoplasty outcomes based on cell viability and cartilage health. In this in vitro investigation, 4 distinct surgical manipulations were contrasted with a control group using cartilage from bovine snouts: crushed cartilage, scored cartilage, diced cartilage, and shaved cartilage. Relative to control specimens, the most destructive methods of cartilage manipulation were the crushing manipulation followed by shaving and then dicing. A recommendation was made for considering the least damaging, yet adequate cartilage manipulation to improve clinical outcomes in scenarios where clinical needs dictate the use of cartilage grafts.
