Characteristics of venom allergy at initial evaluation: Is fire ant hypersensitivity similar to flying Hymenoptera?

Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Oct 26, 2019

Szari SM, et al. - Researchers characterized the initial presentation and explore variations between patients with imported fire ant (IFA) and flying Hymenoptera (FH) reactions in this multiyear (2007-2014), observational, single-institution study performed on patients referred for assessment of Hymenoptera venom allergy. Through physician interviews, chart review and specific IgE findings, they acquired data. They found many similarities between IFA and FH patients at presentation. Relative to the general US population, the observed occurrence of asthma was 2.5 times more frequent in this cohort. There was suboptimal epinephrine administration in this cohort. Initial reactions were detected in children and they received similar treatment in the emergency department (ED) as received by adults, with a notable (although not statistically significant) decreased use of epinephrine. Venom allergy was established and life-saving immunotherapy was started in most of the patients examined in the ED and subsequently followed up in an allergy clinic.
