Characteristics of usual physical therapy post-total knee replacement and their associations with functional outcomes
Arthritis Care & Research Sep 11, 2019
Oatis CA, et al. - Experts characterized the content, dose, and progression of usual post-acute physical therapy (PT) services after total knee replacement (TKR), and investigated relations of specific details of post-acute PT with patients’ 6-month functional outcomes. A total of 112 records from 30 PT sites were analyzed. Content and dose of specific exercises and incidence of progression differed extensively. Open chain exercises were used more often than a closed chain. Median (IQR) occurrence of progression was zero and one, of closed and open-chain exercise, respectively. The shorter timed stair climb was related to greater total number of PT interventions and the use and progression of closed chain exercises. Therefore, data imply that evidence-based interventions are underutilized and the dose may be inadequate to get optimal outcomes.
