Characteristics of peanut allergy diagnosis in a US healthcare claims database (2011-2017)
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Dec 23, 2020
Mahr TA, Lieberman JA, Haselkorn T, et al. - In this large, nationally representative, longitudinal claims analysis, researchers estimated annual incidence and prevalence of peanut allergy cases among children aged 4-17-years and evaluated severe reaction and associated healthcare utilization rates. Between 1/2011-12/2017, patient longitudinal data from a geographically and payor-type representative US healthcare claims database have been utilized. Using diagnostic codes and/or services indicating peanut-allergy-associated severe reactions/anaphylaxis, cases of peanut allergy have been identified. Between 2001 and 2017, annual incidence rose from 1.7% to 5.2%. Atopic comorbidities and other food allergies were prevalent. Claims data indicate that the incidence and prevalence of peanut allergy may increase in the US. Estimated severe reaction rates and healthcare utilization were high, indicating that the burden of peanut allergy may be considerable.
