JAMA Feb 24, 2020

O’Donnell EP, et al. - The pediatric emergency departments (EDs) face higher volumes of individuals showing with psychiatric concerns with increasing rates of mental health illness among children in the United States and diminishing community health resources. While EDs are tasked with giving extended care for individuals with acute mental illness, little is recorded on the clinical characteristics or interventions applied in managing high-risk patients awaiting placement.
