Characteristics of lung cancer among patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and interstitial lung disease: Analysis of institutional and population data

Respiratory Research Oct 09, 2018

Yoon JH, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective analysis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and non-IPF interstitial lung disease (ILD) patients to characterize the epidemiologic and clinical features of lung cancer for both groups of patients. They used institutional and statewide data registries. Both IPF and lung cancer was present in 31 patients out of 1,108 IPF patients. According to findings, the frequency of lung cancer diagnosis was approximately 3.34 times higher in IPF patients vs general population. In addition, lung cancer was found to be related to worse prognosis vs IPF without lung cancer; among IPF patients, lung cancer tended towards lower lobes and by squamous cell histology.
