Characteristics of keratinocyte carcinomas in Hispanics compared to non-Hispanic whites: A retrospective 5-year study
Photodermatology, Photoimmunology and Photomedicine Aug 11, 2019
Cheng J, Rajanala S, Widjajahakim R, et al. - Among Hispanics and non-Hispanic whites, researchers compared the clinical and histologic features of keratinocyte carcinomas. In order to identify all histologically-confirmed cases of keratinocyte carcinomas, a 5-year retrospective chart review was carried out at a single academic center. A total of 198 tumors were identified, with 76% of them in non-Hispanic whites and 24% in Hispanics. Compared with non-Hispanic whites, tumor diameter was not larger and histologic subtype was not more aggressive in Hispanics. Hispanics had a younger age of diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma vs non-Hispanic whites. Overall, the authors concluded higher-risk keratinocyte carcinomas, in terms of diameter, differentiation, and tumor subtype, were not more likely in Hispanics vs non-Hispanic whites.
