Characteristics of ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage in patients with nephrotic syndrome
BMC Nephrology Jun 09, 2021
Huang WY, Chang CW, Chen CM, et al. - Via this population-based retrospective cohort analysis, the clinical presentation as well as prognosis of patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS) and ischemic stroke (IS) or intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) were analyzed. The Chang Gung Research Database of Taiwan was used. This analysis involved 233 patients with IS and 57 patients with ICH, with a median age of 60 (52–70) years. Higher prevalence rates of hyperlipidemia, hyperuricemia, and smoking were detected in IS vs in ICH. Lower white blood cell count and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level and higher cholesterol, triglyceride, and albumin concentrations were detected in IS vs ICH. Findings revealed a higher risk of dependence and 30-day mortality in ICH vs in IS among patients suffering from NS. Employing intensive monitoring and treatment is recommended, especially in cases with NS and ICH.
