Characteristics of emergency department visits by homeless young adults in the U.S.
Journal of Adolescent Health Jan 22, 2021
Nam E, et al. - This investigation draws on data from from the 2011–2015 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey to increase understanding of emergency department (ED) visits among homeless young adults within the U.S. All ED visits made by homeless and housed young adults aged 18–29 years (unweighted N = 25,068) were included in the survey for this analysis. This research illustrated disparities in ED use for homeless young adults. The results of this study indicate that the features of ED services obtained by homeless young adults need to be further investigated in order to better understand disparities in ED service receipt linked to housing status. This information will guide efforts to lower costs by improving access to housing and outpatient mental healthcare and decreasing stigma among healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care.
