Characteristics of diabetes diagnosis and control in toddlers and preschoolers from families with limited resources: A single center experience
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Dec 08, 2019
Hassan MM, et al. - Researchers intended to define the features of diabetes diagnosis, insulin treatment concerning type, dose and frequency as well as the degree of glycemic control attained in toddlers and preschoolers from families with limited resources. This investigation included 69 toddlers and preschoolers who were clinically diagnosed as type 1 diabetes. Findings revealed frequent presentation with diabetic ketoacidosis at diagnosis as well as suboptimal self-monitoring of blood glucose and glycemic control in toddlers and preschoolers with diabetes coming from families with limited resources. In this age group, more frequent use of NPH was reported, together with postprandial rapid analogues and less often preprandial regular insulin, resulting in more favorable HbA1c but with a greater risk of hypoglycemia. Ketoacidosis and uncontrolled hyperglycemia were documented as the most frequent cause of hospital readmission.
