Characteristics and outcomes of recipients of heart transplant with coronavirus disease 2019
JAMA May 17, 2020
Latif F, Farr MA, Clerkin KJ, et al. - Researchers sought to describe the characteristics and outcomes of patients with heart transplant who are infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). From a single large academic heart transplant program in New York, they assessed a case series of 28 patients who had received heart transplant and were infected with COVID-19 [median age: 64.0 years; 22 (79%) men; median time from HT: 8.6 (IQR, 4.2-14.5) years]. These patients had case fatality rate of 25% and had cardiovascular comorbidities frequently. Reduction in immunosuppressive therapy was done in most of these patients. Observations thus suggest high risk for severe complications from coronavirus disease 2019 infection in this population; management of this population is complex and should be done in a transplant center. ,
