Characteristics and outcomes of patients with hematologic malignancies receiving chemotherapy in the intensive care unit
Cancer Jun 23, 2018
Pastores SM, et al. - In this retrospective, single-center study, researchers assessed the outcomes, both short- and long-term, of patients with hematologic malignancies who had chemotherapy in the intensive care unit (ICU) vs a matched cohort of ICU patients who did not receive chemotherapy. Using conditional logistic regression and shared-frailty Cox regression, they evaluated short-term (ICU and hospital) mortality and death within 12 months of hospital discharge, respectively. Data showed ICU and hospital mortality rates in chemotherapy patients were 25% and 42% vs 22% and 33% for non-chemotherapy patients. In both the patient groups, similar short-term mortality was found. Increased resource utilization by patients who received chemotherapy was also observed.
