Characteristics and outcomes of early recurrent myocardial infarction after acute myocardial infarction

Journal of the American Heart Association Aug 06, 2021

Nair R, Johnson M, Kravitz K, et al. - Early recurrent myocardial infarction (RMI) is associated with nearly 50% mortality within 5 years, thus it represents a life‐threatening condition.

  • Among 6,626 admissions for acute myocardial infarction (index myocardial infarction), 168 had RMI within 90 days of discharge.

  • The 90‐day likelihood of readmission with an early RMI was 2.5%.

  • Independent predictors of early RMI included black race, medical management, higher troponin T, and shorter length of stay.

  • The majority of early RMI were due to stent‐related events and progression in coronary artery disease.

  • Prevention of early RMI requires medication compliance, aggressive risk factor management, and care transitions.
