Characteristics and outcomes of early recurrent myocardial infarction after acute myocardial infarction
Journal of the American Heart Association Aug 06, 2021
Nair R, Johnson M, Kravitz K, et al. - Early recurrent myocardial infarction (RMI) is associated with nearly 50% mortality within 5 years, thus it represents a life‐threatening condition.
Among 6,626 admissions for acute myocardial infarction (index myocardial infarction), 168 had RMI within 90 days of discharge.
The 90‐day likelihood of readmission with an early RMI was 2.5%.
Independent predictors of early RMI included black race, medical management, higher troponin T, and shorter length of stay.
The majority of early RMI were due to stent‐related events and progression in coronary artery disease.
Prevention of early RMI requires medication compliance, aggressive risk factor management, and care transitions.
