Characteristics and outcomes following motorized and non-motorized vehicular trauma in a resource-limited setting
Injury Apr 16, 2021
An SJ, Purcell LN, Mulima G, et al. - Although motorized vehicular transport is ubiquitous, non-motorized transportation continues to be common in sub-Saharan Africa. As vehicular injury is a leading cause of mortality in resource poor settings, researchers herein sought for predictors of mortality following non-motorized vehicular trauma. They included a total of 36,412 patients involved in vehicular road injuries who presented to Kamuzu Central Hospital in Malawi from February 2008 to May 2018. The motorized and non-motorized groups had crude mortality rates of 4.51% and 2.15%, respectively. No significant difference in incidence rate ratio of death was observed between motorized and non-motorized trauma groups. Based on findings, they recommend healthcare providers not to underestimate the severity of injuries from non-motorized trauma.
