Characteristics and outcome of patients with newly diagnosed advanced or metastatic lung cancer admitted to intensive care units (ICUs)
Annals of Intensive Care Aug 09, 2018
Barth C, et al. - Researchers performed this retrospective multicentric study to assess the prognosis of patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with a newly diagnosed lung cancer (diagnosis within the month) between 2010 and 2013.Ffor newly diagnosed, unresectable lung cancer patients, ICU management could be appropriate. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients admitted for cancer-related complications might see a benefit from chemotherapy. Nonetheless, ICU admission should be determined after considering tumor characteristics, numbers and types of organ dysfunction. They observed that metastatic disease and need for immediate invasive mechanical ventilation were related to mortality. With the rising severity of acute illness, a rise in mortality was observed.
