Characteristics, aetiologies and trends of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients without cirrhosis: A United States multicentre study
Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics Sep 05, 2019
Gawrieh S, Dakhoul L, Miller E, et al. - In this large US multicentre study, researchers assessed features, aetiologies, trends and outcomes of non-cirrhotic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC; the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide causing more than 700,000 deaths per year) from 2000 to 2014. Based on published criteria, the presence of underlying cirrhosis was evaluated. According to results, 11.7% of 5,144 eligible HCC patients did not have any underlying cirrhosis. In patients with no underlying cirrhosis, approximately 12% of HCCs occurred. The most common liver disease in these patients was non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Non-cirrhotic HCC frequency decreased during the study while cirrhotic HCC frequency increased. Patients with non-cirrhotic HCC had larger tumors, were less common in Milan criteria, had resection more frequently, and had better overall survival than patients with cirrhotic HCC.
