Changing pattern of chronic hepatitis C in renal transplant patients over 20 years
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Aug 13, 2019
Emori CT, Uehara SNO, Carvalho-Filho RJ, et al. - Since the prevalence and clinical epidemiological profile of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection have changed over time, researchers assessed these changes in renal transplant recipients (RTx) comparing two different decades. For this investigation, they retrospectively studied RTx with HCV referred to RTx from 1993 to 2003 (A) and from 2004 to 2014 (B). Investigators found that the prevalence of HCV was 7% in A and 4.9% in B among 11,715 RTx. Over the last 20 years, the profile of RTx with HCV has changed. Despite a decline in HCV prevalence, new clinical challenges like more advanced age and a higher prevalence of cirrhosis have emerged.
