Changes in the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and severe obesity between 2010 and 2017 in preschoolers: A population-based study
Pediatric Obesity Jul 25, 2019
Ball GDC, et al. - In a population of 4- to 6-year-olds from 2010 to 2017, researchers assessed changes in overweight, obesity and severe obesity. During children's preschool immunization visits in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta, Canada, anthropometric data were gathered. Population-level data from 161,114 children over 8 years were reviewed; over that time the prevalence of overweight and obesity decreased, while severe obesity remained unchanged. In both boys and girls, overweight declined. It was noted that obesity reduced in boys, but not girls, however, severe obesity in both sexes stayed the same. Annual household income and breastfeeding had positive, but variable moderating effects exclusively on overweight and obesity. Lower overweight and obesity have been positive findings, but targeted strategies are needed to reduce severe preschool obesity.
