Changes in muscle strength of the hip after rotational acetabular osteotomy: A retrospective study
The Bone & Joint Journal Nov 13, 2019
Enishi T, Yagi H, Higuchi T, et al. - Fifty-seven individuals underwent rotational acetabular osteotomy (RAO) for acetabular dysplasia in order to examine variations in muscle strength, gait speed, and clinical outcome in the operated hip following RAO over a one-year period using a usual protocol for rehabilitation. At six months following RAO, hip muscle strength and gait speed had recovered to their preoperative levels. At one year, the clinical outcome was outstanding, however, the strength of hip flexion did not progress to the same degree as that of hip abduction and gait speed. A higher BMI may lead to a poorer recovery of hip muscle strength following RAO. At one year’s follow-up, acetabular coverage did not influence the recovery of hip muscle strength radiologically. Moreover, a more intensive rehabilitation programme could make it better.
