Changes in metabolic syndrome status are associated with altered risk of pancreatic cancer: A nationwide cohort study
Gastroenterology Oct 19, 2021
Park JH, Han K, Hong JY, et al. - A decreased risk of pancreatic cancer was observed in relation to recovering from metabolic syndrome (MetS) vs persistent MetS, therefore, changes in MetS can modify the risk of pancreatic cancer.
This is a nationwide cohort study of 8,203,492 adults without cancer; of these, 8,010 developed pancreatic cancer during follow-up (median, 5.1 years).
Relative to the MetS-free group, the highest risk of pancreatic cancer (hazard ratio [HR] 1.30) was evident in the MetS-persistent group, followed by the MetS-developed group (HR 1.17) and the MetS-recovered group (HR 1.12) post-adjustment for potential confounders.
The link between alterations in MetS status and pancreatic cancer risk did not differ by gender or obesity.
