Changes in medial meniscal 3d position and morphology predict knee replacement in rapidly progressing knee osteoarthritis – data from the osteoarthritis initiative (oai)
Arthritis Care & Research Mar 26, 2020
Roth M, Emmanuel K, Wirth W, et al. - This research was attempted to assess if quantitative variations in the meniscus prognosticate progression from early knee osteoarthritis (KOA) to knee replacement (KR). Researchers carried out a nested case‐control study among osteoarthritis Initiative individuals: All 35 case knees with baseline Kellgren‐Lawrence‐Grade (KLG) ≤ 2 that had KR between 36‐60 months were matched 1:1 by age, gender, and baseline KLG to 35 control knees, without subsequent KR. They applied paired t‐tests and case‐control odds ratios (OR, standardized per SD of change in controls) to compare variations between groups. The evidence showed that quantitative measures of meniscal position and morphology are correlated with subsequent KR in knees with rapidly progressing KOA. It was indicated that structural differences of the meniscus are correlated to an important clinical and economic result of KOA.
